One Parking Sign Per Block is Enough

In the world of parking tickets, knowledge is power. It especially helps to know some of the lesser known parking rules when it comes to avoiding or disputing parking tickets.

For example, how long does a New York City block need to be before two parking signs are required?

Answer: It doesn’t matter! One parking sign is always enough according to New York City rules:

(a) General provisions.

(1) Compliance with rules. No person shall stop, stand or park a vehicle, whether attended or unattended, other than in accordance with authorized signs, pavement markings, or other traffic control devices, unless necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with law or direction of any law enforcement officer or other person authorized to enforce these rules.

(i) Sign placement. For purposes of this §4-08, one authorized regulatory sign anywhere on a block, which is the area of sidewalk between one intersection and the next, shall be sufficient notice of the restriction(s) in effect on that block.

Whether the block you park on is a few yards or a few miles long, “I didn’t see the sign.” is never a strong defense unless the view of the sign was obstructed by another object. This is always why it’s so important to take photos of the entire block if you are filing a dispute. Drive safe and park smart!
